Confirmation Preparation at St. Thomas More
Growing in Faith. Encountering Christ. Living as Disciples.
Confirmation at St. Thomas More is more than preparation for a single day—it is an invitation for young people to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ, discover the gifts God has given them, and grow as active members of our Catholic faith community.
Confirmation Candidates are students in grades 9–12 whose families are registered St. Thomas More parishioners.
Our Confirmation program combines faith formation, prayer, community, service, and opportunities for personal encounters with Christ. Throughout the year, candidates are encouraged to ask questions, explore their Catholic faith, build meaningful relationships, and discover what it means to live as disciples of Jesus in their everyday lives.
Journey of Faith
Our Confirmation curriculum takes candidates through a progressive journey centered on the questions: Who are you—and more importantly, Whose are you?
Course topics include:
- Introduction to Confirmation — Understanding the Sacrament, the Holy Spirit, and the journey ahead.
- Self-Knowledge & Spirituality — Discovering our identity as beloved children of God, exploring prayer and spirituality, and identifying our unique spiritual gifts.
- Foundations of Catholicism — Exploring Scripture, Tradition, the Creed, Sacraments, and the foundations of our Catholic faith.
- Called to Sainthood Retreat — A special opportunity for prayer, reflection, witness, community, and encounter with Christ while exploring the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and our universal call to holiness.
- The Mass & the Eucharist — Discovering more deeply the Real Presence of Christ and why the Eucharist is the source and summit of our Catholic faith.
- Discipleship & Mission — Learning how our gifts, faith, and relationship with Christ call us to serve others and share the Gospel.
- Living the Faith Every Day — Helping candidates recognize that Confirmation is not a graduation from the Church, but the beginning of a lifelong journey of discipleship.
Candidates also select a Confirmation Saint and are encouraged to learn their Saint's story, build a relationship with them, and turn to them for prayer and intercession. Each candidate also chooses a Confirmation Sponsor who will serve as a mentor and companion in faith.
Faith in Action
An important part of Confirmation preparation happens outside the classroom.
Candidates are expected to participate in at least three service opportunities during the year. Opportunities may include Rise Against Hunger, parish service days, Knights of Columbus Fish Fries, parish events and hospitality, Children's Liturgy of the Word, community outreach, and other service opportunities.
Our goal isn't simply to complete service hours. We want our young people to discover the joy of serving, recognize Christ in others, and understand that service is an important part of living as a disciple.
Becoming Part of Our STM Faith Family
Confirmation candidates are also encouraged to become active participants in the life of St. Thomas More.
Candidates participate in at least two Youth-Led Masses between October and May, with opportunities to serve as lectors, greeters, ushers, cross bearers, gift bearers, musicians, and in other liturgical roles.
Young people are also encouraged to participate in STM Youth Ministry through MORE IMPACT, Jesus & Java, OPEN JYM, retreats, service projects, conferences, social gatherings, and other opportunities throughout the year.
These experiences allow our young people to build friendships rooted in faith and, most importantly, provide opportunities to encounter Christ.

Come, Holy Spirit
Our hope is that every young person leaves Confirmation preparation not simply ready to receive a Sacrament, but knowing more deeply that they are known, loved, and called by God.
We strive to meet each young person where they are in their faith journey while encouraging them to take the next step—to show up, ask questions, participate, serve, pray, and take advantage of opportunities to encounter Christ.
Confirmation isn't the finish line. It's the beginning of a lifelong journey with Christ and His Church.
