Letter Writing Campaign

The Social Justice Commission will start a letter writing campaign this season again but this time on the topic of affordable housing to send a message to our State elected officials in Des Moines. The average rent for a two-bedroom apartment in Johnson County is approximately $900 per month. A family would need to constantly maintain nearly three-and-a-half full-time jobs at the currently allowed by Iowa law minimum wage of $7.25 per hour to make the $900 per month rent affordable.

Recently in our community we have seen local manufactured and mobile home communities purchased by out-of-state interests who have immediately increased the monthly lot rents to unfair levels, placing the current residents in immediate financial hardships and potential loss of their homes. We would like to collect as many letters as possible to deliver to State Capitol to send the strongest message in support of this great cause of affordable housing. The letter writing campaign will be at the end of each Mass. There will be a sample letter but people will be able to personalize their letters with their own touch. The campaign will go from Sunday Feb 23 to April 05.
